THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, operated by TRV (Kerala) International Airport Limited (TIAL), has registered a robust 41% growth in domestic cargo handling during the first five months of FY 2026–27 compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. The domestic cargo division currently handles an average of 350 metric tonnes of cargo per month.
The growth highlights the airport’s increasing role in facilitating the swift transport of perishable, time-sensitive, and essential commodities, connecting Kerala with key markets across the country.
“The strong growth in domestic cargo reflects the growing confidence of businesses and logistics partners in Thiruvananthapuram Airport. From perishables and seafood to pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and courier consignments, air cargo is playing a crucial role in supporting Kerala’s economy. With Vizhinjam emerging as a major maritime gateway, we see significant potential to further strengthen the region’s integrated logistics ecosystem,” said a spokesperson for Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.
Diverse Commodity Movement
The airport handles a wide range of outbound cargo, including fresh flowers, chilled seafood, ornamental fish, medical kits, courier consignments, postal mail, and rubber stems. Notably, rubber stems are transported to various Northeastern states to support plantation development, while ornamental fish are shipped to major cities including Delhi, Agra, and Jammu.
Inbound shipments primarily consist of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, medical equipment, mobile phones, meat products, courier consignments, automobile components, postal mail, optical lenses, and other essential goods. This air cargo network ensures fast and reliable transport, providing critical support to the healthcare, agriculture, and fisheries sectors.
Expanding Courier Operations
The airport is also witnessing a expansion in courier cargo operations. Logistics companies are now actively dispatching outbound consignments from Thiruvananthapuram alongside handling inbound shipments, further expanding the airport’s regional logistics footprint.
Synergy with Vizhinjam Port
The recent commencement of full-fledged Export-Import (EXIM) operations at the Vizhinjam International Seaport is set to boost the region’s overall logistics infrastructure.
The close proximity between the airport and Vizhinjam Port creates strong opportunities for integrated air-sea cargo linkages. This multimodal connectivity enables businesses to select the most efficient transport mode based on urgency and commodity type.
With strong growth in domestic air cargo and Vizhinjam establishing itself as a global maritime gateway, Thiruvananthapuram is well-positioned to evolve into a major multimodal logistics hub, strengthening Kerala’s position in national and global supply chains.
