Aligs in Jeddah Celebrate Sir Syed Day 2025

JEDDAH: AMUOBA Jeddah, the union of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumni, marked Sir Syed Day 2025, commemorating the 208th birth anniversary of AMU founder and social reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. The annual event, held at Crowne Plaza Jeddah, brought together nearly 400 members of the AMU community and their families.

The Consul General of India in Jeddah, Mr. Fahad Ahmed Khan Suri, attended as Chief Guest. In his address, he described the Alig community as a valuable link between India and Saudi Arabia, contributing to bilateral cooperation and national development. Referring to the recent AI & Data Science Workshop conducted jointly with the AMU Old Boys Association (AMUOBA), he highlighted the potential of diaspora-led initiatives in technology, commerce, culture, and youth development. He also emphasized India’s current trajectory of growth and innovation and the significant role played by the Indian diaspora.

AMUOBA President Aqeel Jamil Khan, in his presidential remarks, reiterated Sir Syed’s emphasis on education, critical thinking, and institution-building. He outlined several key initiatives undertaken by the association, including the Youth Leadership Program, the AI & Data Science Workshop, the Each One Teach One support initiative for underprivileged students, and upcoming mentorship sessions. He also announced planned India–Saudi business collaboration programs aimed at supporting Indian products in the Kingdom. He added that there are around 500 Aligs in the Western Region and nearly 3,000 across Saudi Arabia, contributing to Vision 2030 across sectors.

Guest of Honor Prof. Javed Musarrat commended AMUOBA’s activities and urged the community to continue prioritizing modern education, technology adoption, and social service.

The event also featured remarks from Abdulrehman Amri, Senior Director at EFSiM, who appreciated AMUOBA’s efforts and noted the alignment of Sir Syed’s principles with the organization’s focus on people, learning, and leadership.

AMUOBA recognized several community members, including Senior Alig Mohammad Hashim, outgoing Consul (Commercial); alumnus and author Danish Ghafoor; and long-time community contributor Bahjat Zinjani. The association also released the latest issue of the Alig Communique newsletter.

A raffle draw, distribution of mementos to dignitaries, and presentations by young attendees were part of the program. The event concluded with the university anthem “Taraana,” followed by dinner.

Vice President Asim Zeeshan delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of committee members and volunteers. The program was anchored by General Secretary Prince Mufti Ziaul Hasan.
